You've just brought the most incredible little person into the world. The tiny fingers, the way they curl up perfectly, the smell of their hair — these moments pass faster than you can possibly imagine. That's exactly why newborn photography exists: to freeze these fleeting days so you can hold onto them forever.

If you've never had a newborn session before, it's completely normal to have questions — or to feel a little nervous about how it all works. Here's everything you need to know about what to expect when you book a newborn photography session with Legacy Lens Photography in Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, or anywhere across the Waterloo Region.

When Should You Book?

The sweet spot for newborn photography is within the first two weeks of life — ideally between days 5 and 14. During this window, babies are still in that deeply sleepy, naturally curled-up stage that makes for the most peaceful, beautiful images. After about two weeks, babies become more alert and harder to settle, which means shorter stretches of stillness.

I always recommend booking during your third trimester, before baby arrives. That way your spot is secured and we can confirm the final date once you're holding that little one in your arms. Don't worry — life with a newborn is unpredictable, and I build flexibility into every booking.

Where Does the Session Take Place?

I offer in-home sessions and natural-light sessions across the Waterloo Region, including Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph. In-home sessions are honestly my personal favourite — there's something so intimate and beautiful about capturing a new family in the actual space where they live, love, and are beginning this new chapter. Natural light from a large window is truly all we need to create stunning images.

If you don't feel your home works for a shoot, we can discuss outdoor natural-light options as well depending on the season.

How Long Does It Take?

Newborn sessions are unhurried by design — I never rush. Plan for 2 to 3 hours, which gives baby all the time they need to feed, settle, be changed, and be their perfect little self. There is no such thing as a "fussy" baby during a newborn session. There's just a baby who needs a moment, and that is completely okay. We work at their pace, always.

What Should You Wear?

Simple and soft is always the best choice. Neutral tones — creams, whites, soft greys, warm taupes — photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby where it belongs. Avoid busy patterns or bright colours, which can distract from the tenderness of the moment. Above all, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. You've just had a baby — comfort matters.

Do You Offer Maternity and Newborn Together?

Yes! My Bump + Baby collection lets you combine a maternity session and your newborn session into one beautiful package at a bundled rate. It's one of my most cherished offerings, because it tells the full beginning-to-arrival story of your growing family. The before and the after. The bump and the baby. Together, they become something truly special.

What Happens After the Session?

After your session, I hand-edit every single image with care and intention — no rushing, no batch filters. You'll receive a beautiful gallery of fully edited photographs, typically within 2 to 3 weeks. These are yours to keep, print, frame, and treasure for the rest of your life.

I am based in Cambridge and serve the entire Waterloo Region — Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, and beyond. If you're expecting and would love to talk about capturing those very first days, I'd be honoured to be part of your family's story.
